A brief overview of Chapala:

• Chapala is a town and municipality situated in the central Mexican state of Jalisco, on the northern shore of Lake Chapala, which is Mexico’s largest freshwater lake.
• Historically, the region was inhabited by nomadic Amerindian tribes, including the Nahuatl, prior to Spanish arrival in the 16th century. These groups migrated from northwestern Mexico and contributed to the development of the Aztec civilization. The town’s name honors the last Nahuatl chief, Chapalac.
• Ajijic, the second-largest town along the lake's northwestern shoreline, derives its name from the Nahuatl word meaning “Place where the water springs forth.”
• Lake Chapala covers approximately 1,112 square kilometers (430 square miles) and serves as an essential habitat for various migratory bird species, including the white pelican.
